And Alonso had nowhere else he would rather be.

Amusingly, this session occurred during another one of F1's many experiments with the qualifying format. The shortlived aggregate system when drivers got a lap on low fuel Saturday and one on race fuel Sunday morning was scrapped after Monaco.

Maybe this is how they need to fix qualifying. They keep making all these changes to try to have cars on track for longer, maybe they should go back to the one car at a time style of qualifying that they were using during this era of F1. You would have cars going 100% for the entirety of the session and drivers would not encounter slower traffic that you currently see with all the cars on track at once. It would also lead to more diversity in the grid order when someone makes a mistake in their one lap.

It’s true that a screw up would mix it up like Bernie wants. It would be a real outcome. I can’t approve anything that doesn’t give a team the place they earned, like reverse grid. Aggregate is actually good because they have a screw up and someone else might as well, but they are added together. So maybe two low fuel runs each, added up and that’s it. I don’t see why they don’t just switch to a format that was good, that they tried and people liked. Experiments are awkward, especially with every already knowing it will suck!

I really like the idea of a single flying lap. It really puts pressure on the driver to get it right the first time. Teams would also like the fact that you would only have one fast lap on their starting tires.

That’s true, I’m not against it.

Single lap is a fun idea but they ruined it by requiring them to run with race fuel. Let them do one lap with minimum fuel, a knife-edge setup and everything turned up to 11 and see how each driver can handle the pressure. That’d be exciting.
